REGISTRATION OF BUSINESS NAMES

 WHAT IS A BUSINESS NAME?

A business name is an identification or confirmation of a business conducted by an individual, a group of people, or a community in general.

 TYPES OF REGISTRATION

  1. Individual Registration – This refers to when a single person registers themselves as the business owner (Sole Proprietorship or Individual), for example, Sahara Store, etc.
  2. Partnership Registration – This involves the registration of a business by a group of people ranging from two (2) to twenty (20) (Partnership).

 BENEFITS OF REGISTERING OR FORMALIZING A BUSINESS NAME

Registering a business name has several benefits, including:

– The business name becomes legally recognized.

– The business name becomes official.

– The business name cannot be used by another person.

– The owner gains exclusive rights, including access to loan opportunities through financial institutions.

– The right to enter into partnerships or contracts with other institutions according to contract laws, helping avoid obstacles in running the business.

 REQUIREMENTS FOR BUSINESS NAME REGISTRATION

To register a business name, the following conditions must be met:

– The business name must be legally acceptable.

– The name must not already be owned by another person.

– The applicant must be a Tanzanian citizen.

– Must be at least 18 years old and eligible to register a business name.

– Must have a valid Tanzanian or Zanzibari resident ID.

– Must have a personally registered mobile number.

– Must have a personal email address.

– Must provide the physical address of the business location.

– Must provide the residential address of the business owner(s).

STEPS TO REGISTER A BUSINESS NAME

  1. Visit the BPRA website at www.bpra.go.tz or ors.bpra.go.tz.
  2. Log in to the e-service portal.
  3. Create an account (username).
  4. Set your account and password.
  5. Register your business.
  6. Choose the type of registration (individual or partnership).
  7. Fill in your personal details or those of the owners, e.g. business name, business location, residential address, house number, and identification details.
  8. After completing the form, you will receive a reference number for payment — which you can pay at the bank or through bank agents.
  9. Once payment is complete, you will receive an application form that must be signed and uploaded back into the system.
  10. Your certificate of registration will be sent within 24 working hours via email.

CHANGING A BUSINESS NAME

Through the BPRA online system, you can change your registered business name to another one by following the same registration procedures.
